The modest gable roofed 2-story structure has a fieldstone-trimmed porch with overscaled turned balusters and conical-roofed corner section. Although this is not a true "Bungalow," the design is evocative of the work of then-contemporary California builders.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) 4 Birch Street possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, and it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is significant as a well conserved buiding from Methuen's last major period of residential development. Such comfortable dwellings were usually crafted by local carpenters and purchased by Methuen's middle class.
