The three-story, shingle-clad building has restrained applied ornament, primarily in the form of garlanded friezes of a tripartite window. A Palladian window is the prominent feature of the central gable, surrounded by square cut shingles and a wooden "keystone" motif.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) 491 Prospect Strees possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is significant as a fine example of the Shingle Style, and as repre- sentative of houses built for Lawrence and Methuen businessmen in Methuen subdivisions after the turn of the century. Fair Oaks, in which this residence is located, was developed by members of the J. D. McAllister family of Methuen.
