The Lawrence Street Cemetery consists of a 1.6 acre grassy, relatively flat lot dotted with mature conifers. Stones are generally made of slate or marble and assumes traditional rectangular or arched silhouetts. The earliest stones are carved with willow motifs while some of the later ones have sentimental Victorian inscriptions. The Tenny tomb, gatehouse, and wall are constructed or rough faced, coursed granite with French Medieval design influences as was his estate. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (discuss religious affiliations, major period of use, importance within town).
In 1832, the town of Methuen purchased land for a new cemetery. Located just southeast of the Spicket River Falls and the Medford-Andover Turnpike (1804-06), its establishment represented the town center's shift from Meetinghause Hill to present day Gaunt Square. Later in the 19th century, Edward F. Searles, whose estate stood across the street, constructed an eight foot high granite wall around the north and west sides of the cemetery. At that time (1891), he also constructed a granite gatehouse and a tomb for his wife. The Lawrence Street Cemetery possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship as well as important associations with the growth and establishment of present day Methuen Center. It is also noted for its associations with the Searles family. It meets criteria A and B of the National Register of Historic Places.
