The Moses Morse House is a large 2½-story, pitched roof dwelling which shows several generations of architectural changes, yet maintains most of its important characteristics. Such buildings are scattered along Methuen's once-rural roads. The massive central chimney and an 18th century ell are intact original features. The central sidelit entry of the five-bay facade has a ca.1870 Italianate porch hood with pendant brackets. The 2/2 sash in the simple windows of the main facade are also a later addition.

The clapboard-clad building rests on a granite foundation. The off-center location of the chimney may indicate the house's evolution from a three-bay to five-bay configuration. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Moses Morse House is an early farmstead representative of the development of 18th century architecture in rural Methuen. Such dwellings were constructed by farmers such as Moses Morse who sold their produce to markets in Salem and Newburyport, and later Lowell and Lawrence. It possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship and meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
