Park Lodge is representative of the architectural tastes of Edward Searles, a local philanthropist and creator of the nearby extensive "Pine Lodge" estate. Searles' remodellin of a ca.1840 Greek Revival (?) farmhouse included a stucco facade and massive chimneys which contribute to the building's atypical appearance.Shingled, pedimented gables and dormers were emphasized in the remodelling; the 2½-story house of asymmetrical plan has gable roofs and three massive rebuilt chimneys.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) Park Lodge is significant for its association with Edward Searles, a Methuen-born millionaire who had an intense interest in architecture, particularly English Revival styles. Park Lodge, situated along an early route, originated as a mid 19th century farmhouse belonging to Jesse Searles, a farmer. It appears that the farmhouse was extensively renovated to its present appearance by Edward Searles, whose estate, "Pine Lodge" occupied nearby acreage. It is not known if Searles lived here during the construction of Pine Lodge, but the building is illustrated in an early engraving in the collection of the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum. Park Lodge possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship.
It meets criteria A and B of the National Register of Historic Places. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher) 1884 Essex County Map of Methuen.
