The Perkins House is an excellent example of a Greek Revival style cottage which may have evolved from an 18th century dwelling. y avelping. ahe five-bay, at The five-bay, central entry facade is distinguished by a prominent cornice and pilaster strips at the corners. The Greek Revival entry has a broad entablature carried by pilasters. The original sidelights have been blocked. The clapboard-clad building rests on a cut-granite foundation.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Perkins House is significant as an example of the development of architectural styles and residential building types along the early network of roads which characterized Methuen during the first two centuries of settlement. The occupants of such dwellings were usually farmers, supplying produce to Salem and Newburyport or Lowell and Lawrence (after 1825 and 1845 respectively), or shoe and hat makers. Joseph Perkins, a 19th century owner of this house, was a The Perkins House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship, and meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
