The Turnpike House is a 1'½-story, pitched roof structure with a five-bay, central entry facade. Later alterations, including a projecting bay and garage/dwelling addition at the north, have not obscured the original features of the dwelling. The windows, with simple enframements, have 2/2 sash. The central entry is lit by five-paned, full-length sidelights. The clapboard-clad buiding rests on a granite foundation.

The Turnpike House is one of the most intact early 19th century cottages remaining in Methuen. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The so-called "Turnpike House" is significant as one of central Methuen's earliest residences, built shortly after the construction of the 1806 Essex Turnpike which linked Methuen with Boston and brought a great deal of travel and trade along what is now Broadway. The building possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It meets criterion A for its associations with the early development of central Methuen and criterion C as a good example of its style and type.
