The George Waldo House is an example of one of few high-styled houses from the Federal period in Methuen. Constructed ca.1825, it is a 2½-story-plus-monitor hipped-roof dwelling of square plan. A central pavillion with a pedimented gable surrounded by a raking cornice and a sidelit entry with elliptical fanlight appear to be part of a turn-of-the-century addition.
Windows have simple enframements and contain 6/6/sash. The house is well sited, with a granite and cast iron fence running the length of Lawrence St. Two free-standing granite Corinthian columns carrying urns are situated at the western edge of the property, an addition made by Edward Searles, who owned the abutting property. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The George Waldo House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials. and workmanship. It is significant as a high-styled early 19th century Methuer residence, associated with several prominent owners, including John Low, a druggist.
This residence is a survivor of a period when Lawrence Street was one of few routes leading to the present-day town center and preserves a significant portion of the original landscape of Lawrence Street, now built with later 19th century development. The Waldo House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
