Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Hopewell School is a good example of Renaissance Revival design and an important community landmark in Whittenton. The structure was named to commemorate the former Hopewell School, dating fnom the 1880's, which was sited around the corner on Bay Street.
Designed by the Boston architectural firm, Kilham & Hopkins, the school was built in 1914, utilizing the most highly developed fireprool construction methods and materials known at the time. Brick for the structure was supplied from local brickyards, and decorative details were of grey terra cotta and marble. Description: The 3-story brick school features projecting end bays and a very slightly Its main entrance is set, Projectina central pavilion inte whith Its doors are trimmed with a grey terra cotta surround incorporating vaguely Renaissance details, above which is centered a blind window with arched tympanum and ina bontin cartouche. All windows are trimmed in limestone, and those on the second story have keystoned lintels. Large, Flemish-bond brick infilled panels mark original windows that were blinded. The building ends in a limestone cornice, with brick parapet and coping.
The Hopewell School possesses integiity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places standing with the 10.
