Description of the property

The building stands in an urban area, Cleveland's west side, and is bordered by other Detroit Avenue and West 8lst Street, this building enjoys a spacious lawn with numerous site is sloping, with a pronounced incline down to Detroit Avenue, which marks the site and its name, as the structure terraces down, unit by unit, to meet the lower grade level of Detroit Avenue. building, not exposed to public view, is finished off with rough brick and segmental the first and second floors, is topped by a massive pyramidal roof. Wilm Knox was born in Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland in 1858 and studied architecture in the prestigious firm of Burnham & Root. Here he met John Elliott, with whom he was to at first, but the firm soon won its most important commission in 1889 with the Confeder- ation Life Association Building, which was won in competition with other architects. This large building, which still stands and has been recently renovated, is a large prominent firm in a rapidly growing city, Knox & Elliott prospered in Cleveland.
They designed a number of the city's most prominent buildings of the era, including the Rockefeller Building, the Hippodrome Theatre, the Standard Building, and other large one of a few terraces which were erected in Cleveland and, due to its sloping topography G.C.
