The William Woodward House is an excellent local example of the Federal Style, distinguished by its brick ended design. Constructed c. 1800, it is a symmetrical, five bay, center entry house rising two stories to a low hip roof with a modillion cornice and end wall chimneys. Its facade and rear elevation are shingle clad. Windows with simple surroundings retain- original 6/6 sash. The entry was modified with a shed roof hood c. 1870. A date of no later than 1800 is suggested by the brick end walls which have belt courses and symental window openings.
semintal HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The William Woodward House was erected as a stylish Federal period residence c. 1800. In 1866 it was sold to the Old Colony and Newport Railroad for use as a depot until a station was erected for that purpose in 1876 (#45). The entry was likely modified during this period. The William Woodward House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship as well as significant assocations with Taunton's 19th century development, especially during its period of use as the railroad depot. It is also a fine local example of the Federal style. It is also a fine local example of the Federal stylec Thus the Woodward House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of HIstoric Places.
