Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 101 Somerset Ave. is among the most high style expressions in Taunton, sited in a neighborhood dominated by large, late 19th century residences. It is somewhat unique for its combi- nation of Italianate deatils-- square plan, cupola, bracketed eaves and pilastered wall treatment-- with a Mansard roof, cast in an extremely pronounced belcast curve.
Sources differ on the original ownership of the structure. Maps dating from the 1880's (by which time the house is specu- lated to have been built) cite G.H. Babbitt as owner, although no property convenyance records exist in his name. Records at the Old Colony Historical Society show that the house was built for a salesman, William Lawrence, by prolific local carpenter, Abel Burt. Description: The square structure is 2 stories and terminates in a Mansard roof with ogee-curved sides. The central entrance is set in a round-arched molded surround, and features a round-arched transom conforming to its shape. A front porch is supported on chamfered posts (paired) that meet a dentilated and bracketed cornice. Elongated, G/6 windows are topped by dentilated hoods on feet. The wall surface is defined by paneled pilasters at corners and framing the central bay, fascia.
The roof is crowned by a central cupola, and is lit by 1o is crovned by t that are contiguous with a roolline ogee-roofea dormers. 10. I think I mentioned that a neighbor and I are driving there this weekend at the invitation of the Director, Mr. Carpentier. Although the season has ended for the Village as far as classes go, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to see a completed restoration project. (Is any project ever really completed?).
