(Although #9 Linden Street has a few Greek Revival elements, its overall ap- pearance has been substantially altered.) Evidence of this style is clear in the design of #12 Linden Street, particularly in the pedimented gable, heavy cornice with simple -frieze, and pilastered cormerboards. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) According the Harriet Woods in her book, Historical Sketches of Brook- line, and-an 1844 map of the town, this house was built between 1843 and 1844 as part of the subdivision and development plan for this neighborhood. (For more information on the subdivision, see #29 Linden Place.) Like #s 19 and 53 Linden Street, this house was built and first owned by a merchant. Charles W.
Scudder worked on Federal Street on Boston; he was a hardware merchant, according to the city directory. Scudder was also active in the Harvard Congregational Society and acted as its treasurer and auditor for annumber of years.' rThe Scudder family owned this house through 1893. It is interesting to note that even prior to the arrival of the railraad, parts of the neighborhoods of Brookline Village were developed, and houses were built by men who commuted to Boston to tha arowtn or Che comnenctat apea te aie 19 tanlen Plac (Gim 31-59, Mep 19). L2 Linden Street meets NR criteria A and C, being one of ..a small number of houses whicl remain from the 1843 Linden Place residential subdivision and a rare°gkample of the Greek Revival style. Due to the presence of modern infill, the remaining components of the Linden Place development are being nominated individually.
