Setting In mixed residential neighborhoo, near intersection with major commercial cross street (Harvard Street) Boston South Quadrangle UTM Reference: 19/325130/4689320 (Staple additional sheets hére) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) One of the more flamboyant examples of the Queen Anne style in Brookline; 12 Vernon Street features a front gable roof; turreted bay with vertical boarding; sunrise motifs; a wide entry porch with spindlework and contrasting classical porch supports; lattice-type work in the porch gable and on the second floor; projecting bays; and a swan's neck pedimented The decorative details are so numerous that, in the true Queen Anne fashion, little of the exterior surface is left smooth or flat.

Other houses on the street date from the same period and are of similar size and scale, but none is so elaborately designed nor so well preserved. ISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or stat istory and how the building relates to the development of the community The original owner, William Boynton, like many of his neighbors, was in business in Boston. He owned a wholesale flour firm at 1 Blackstone Street. and well preserved 12 Vernon Street meets NR criteria C, being a unique example of the front gable Queen 'Anne style with both spindlework and free classic detailing.
