One of them, #53 Linden Street, also displays characteristics of the Italianate style as seen in the triple front windows, round arch window in the gable, and brackets as well as in the general propertions of the house. The Greek Revival style is evidenced by the pedimented gable front, ionic columns, paired pilasters, and front and side flushboarding. the onginal gravire waus and posis ara still HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) According to the 1844 map, John G. Faxon owned this house, but according to the tax lists, by 1851 he had sold it to Thomas Howe. Faxon, like several of the people who built homes in this area in the 1840's and 1850's, was a merchant. He worked for J. Whiting and Company, lumber merchants with offices at 86 State Street..
Thomas Howe was also a Boston merchant; by 1884 his estate owned the house and retained ownership through 1913. Number 53 Linden Street was built in 1843-44 at which time the. land, once part of a farm, was subdivided and developed. For more information on that subdivision, see form for #29 Linden Place. Map #39; form 31-147-9) This house and three others in the area: 12 Linden Street, 19 Lin- den Street, and 4 ferry Street, are the only Greek-Revival-type homes which remain in a neighborhood which began to developduping the. 1840's. Their presence helps to recreate a 19th century sense of scale which was challenged by later development. 53 Linden Street meets NR criteria A and C, being one of a handful of houses remaining from the 1843 Linden Place residential subdivizion and a fine, intact example of the Greek Revival style. A high proportion of
century construction in the area meant that the surviving components of Thomas Aspinwall Davis'subdivision must be nominated individually.
