SettingSet back about25feet from the street, at the end of Penniman Place, although on a rather small lot, does not appear hemmed in, as it is bordered on the left by Eliot Playground, a large open space. (Staple additional sheets here) ,entrance, and that this plan enjoyed great, popularity during the middle third of the century. Although at one time there must have been a number of Greek Revival houses in this area, only one other has survived - the house at 155 Reservoir Road, and that one was also moved - otherwise it would have been de- molished like many others.
The building type has survived better in the Village see #s 12 and 19 Linden St. for side-hall plans, the latter house also having a similar side porch with tall windows. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This is a handsome, rather plain Greek Revival vernacular design, with heavy classical proportions and strong three-dimensional forms. The house is pos- itioned with its gable end to the street, and, with the exception of the one story bay on the north side, appears much as it was built, since the addition at the rear of the building was simply an extension of the original ell.
Ele- ments of the Greek Revival style seen here include the enclosed pediment, rak- ing cornice, pilaster corner boards, wide entablature with returns, the simple strongly framed side-hall entranceway with pilasters and sidelights, and the shallow side porch with Doric columns and tall first floor windows. See P. 94 in Old Cambridge for a similar house - this book states that the side-hall entrance plan in this style was more common than the center-hall (Cont. above)* HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This houseis shown on the 1844 map, but is not on the 1830 map. According to available tax lists, Daniel Sanderson had built this house by 1837.
He had bought the old Isaac Sparhawk Gardner place, on the other side of what was known as 1826 Penniman's Poneiman faose sideeoedinind the same property as Penniman had, was assessed $26.69 - obviously he had bought more land and built another house. Harriet Woods wrote "Mr. Sanderson, though not a native of Brookline, lived here many years, held various town offices, and was a prominent member of the Baptist Church. He was also a de 184g satdersounchd soe bunet ta hodnes He built two houses on the west side of Brighton St." property and was living in this noe efå" another one he owned close by (since demolished), and in 1851 he was nnumber of prominent citizens who subscribed $50 toward building a road from the Mill Dam to Washington St.
(present Brookline Ave.) The 1861 tax list shows he had increased his land holdings greatly - that year he owned 2 houses, 2 barns and 33 acres on the west side of Brighton St. In 1912 this house belonged to Jessie Taylor Phillips. (See 41 Taylor Cross- way for information on her property and her parents'.) After 1907 the es- tate was subdivided (see 44 Penniman Rd.) and in 1912 this house was moved from its location at the intersection of Dean Rd. extension and Chestnut Hill Ave. to its present site. # 72 Penniman Pl., across the street, was also moved from another location on the Phillips estate at about this time. 83 Penniman Place meets NR criteria C, being an early and rare local example of the Greek Revival style, particularly unusual for this neighborhood composed of mostly 20th century Georgian and Tudor Revival single family homes.
