Newton Quadrangle UTM References: 19/324240/4688260 Acreage: less than one acre (5M-2-76) Map #:6 GIVE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT MATTER AND/OR DESIGN OF MONUMENT This is one of two known milestones in Brookline, the other being located in front of the United Parish Church on Harvard Street and dating from 1729. The Boylston Street milestone has a slightly-damaged top and was moved to its present location, next to the MBTA bus shelter near Warren Street, for preservation purposes.
According to a local historian, it is similar in size and design to the fifth line of milestones on the ancient road to Cambridge (now Harvard Street) and Watertown (now Washington Street). It is made of slate. GIVE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF HISTORIC IMPORTANCE OF MONUMENT. (Refer to the theme circled on front of form. What happened? Who was important? Comment) This milestone was placed on Boylston Street in 1810, the year that this portion of the Boston/Worcester Turnpike was completed. Construction of the Turnpike began in 1806; its purpose was to provide a more direct route to the west (or east) for traffic coming and going from Boston. It replaced the Sherburne Road (now Walnut and Heath Streets in Brookline) which until the early 1800's had been the town's major highway and road west.
The Turnpike not only by-passed the town's first civic center (intersection of Walnut and Warren Street) and left that area isolated and less prone to future intensive development; but itsalso represented an important initial step in the growth of Brookline Village as the Town's major commercial center during most of the nineteenth century. This milestone meets NR criteria A as part of one of the 19th centuries earliest transportation routes leading west from Boston. REFERENCE: (Where was this information obtained?
