Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Rectory was built in 1886 in memory of Henry Chase who lived on Alton Place and was a very active member of St Paul's congregation. The architecture was described in an article in the Chronicle (vol. 13 pp. 181, 189) as "in harmony with the architecure of the Church, masonry walls of Brighton puddingstone with Nova Scotia freestone trimmings. The interior fireplace is Richardsonian in character.
Peabody and Stearns, the architects, were conscious of comfort and utility, not pretentious display." The Rectory's architectural style, which can be called Jacobethan because of the pitch of the roof, elbows on the parapet wall, diamond panes in the iipper sashes of the windows, and projecting bay window on the second floor, was conceived to complement the Gothic style of the Church next stort The architects' concept of a English countryside scene with a parish churchand modest home for the pastor was successfully communicated to to neighborhood and townspeople for in 1900, one viewer writes: "The Church and rectory form an imposing group of buildings in one of the most charming and picturesque places in Brookline. In 1902, Kingman's article in the History of Norfolk County edited by Hurd (see bibliographical information) states: Ihe buildings and surrondings (of St. Paul's) form the most pleasing and picturesque bits of scenery to be found in this region, reminding the beholder of many fine landscapen views of the English seats and rural scenery of England.
