The Greek Revival-style wood-frame house, basically L-shaped in plan, was built ca. 1858.
The nominated property is located within the densely settled area that comprises the center of West Harwich, a mix of residential and commercial properties whose dates of construction range fram ca. 1775 to the mid 20th century. The Berry House is the only building in the area still housing a single family. The one-acre lot on which the house is situated is flat, with a br oad expanse of lawn. Fronting the house are five deciduous trees, while firs grow on the building's western side. The southern part of the lot is wooded. surrounding the house are low plantings of azaleas, spruce, fire thorn, and nho house aro Toe plantinge Inmediately potentilla. The house is set back about 40 feet fram Main Street. A driveway to the east of the house leads to a small barn also built ca. 1858 (now used as a garage and storehouse) and automobile turnar ound area.
A white fence, a modern replacement of the one visible in an 1898 photograph (Appendix I), Iuns from the driveway to the eastern property line along Main Street. The clapboard-sheathed Berry House is irregular in plan, with a series of ells all contemporary with the main block. A consistent use of the vocabulary of classical ornament unifies the building's various parts. (See floor plan, Appendix II.) The house consists of a gable-fronted three-bay, side-entry main block, 2 1/2 stories in height (A), with two integral ells: one (B) extends three bays to the east, is 1 1/2 stories in height, and is fronted by a Doric-columed portico (now screened); located behind it is the second ell (C), which extends two bays to the south and includes a secondary entrance from the driveway.
At the rear of the building, an attached woodshed (D), also original to the building, was expanded with a two-room addition (E) in 1982. The entire building rests on a brick foundation (E), with bricks made by the West Barnstable Brick Company; other than a small br ick-lined circular cellar beneath the eastern wing, there is no basement. The main block's nor thern facade is framed by Doric pilasters, on which rests the steep-pitched front-facing gable with molded cornice and returns. The entryway is emphasized with Doric pilasters framing a trabeated entry surround. Windows, which are 6/6, are crowned by molded, projecting lintels. The windows are also flanked by blinds. The fluted Doric-columned portico, now screened and with entryways on its nor thern and eastern sides, dominates the three-bay eastern ell. A parapet tops the portico.

The latter, set forward of the ridge, is located at the roof's midpoint. On its eastern side, the eastern ell contains a single window within its gable peak and, on the first story, a flat-roofed polygonal bay with 2/1 sash, probably added later in the 19th century. Also visible on the building's east facade is the rear southern ell, with its secondary entry with Eastlake-style flat-roofed bracketed hood.
The two-bay woodshed, also defined by pilasters and deep entablature, al though of a plainer variety, contains a single door and a 20th century window. The western side of the main block, shielded by a dense stand of fir trees, is two bays deep with windows capped by projecting lintels. A single dormer, again a 1948 addition, is located in the gable roof's southwestern end. Fenestration in the rear ell's western facade is similar to that in the main block. While the rear, southern facade is dominated by the large modern addition, the latter's clapboard exterior, gable roof, corner boards, and cornice are not out of keeping with the rest of the structure. The rear facade of both rear ell and woodshed display raking, molded cornice with returns resting on Doric pilasters.
Each contains a single 6/6 window within its gable peak (that of the rear ell is trabeated, while the woodshed window is more plainly enframed). The Berry House retains its interior plan and much of its trim. Public and formal rooms are located at the front of the building, while service areas are sited at the rear. The bricklined circular cellar, such as is found in a number of Cape houses, is accessible from the kitchen in the rear ell. The freestanding barn is 1 1/2 stories in height, two bays wide, and topped by a raked gable roof. A single-story ell, one bay wide, extends to the east. Formerly a two-stall horse barn (now a garage), the building retains its simply enframed barn door with lintel. A carriage barn and thr ee-stage windmill, which formerly stood to the west of the barn, are no longer standing.
Ar chaeology While no prehistoric sites are currently recorded on the property, it is possible that sites may be present given the large lot size and proximity of the Herring River. Any survival would be significant since the patterns of prehistoric occupation in Harwich are not well understood. Ar chaeological testing could be used to document the location of structures no longer extant, such as the carriage barn and windmill, as well as the overall configuration of the family buildings.
Occupation related features (privies, wells, trashpits) are also likely. Careful sampling and analysis of these features would help to document the social, cultural and economic patterns which characterized this prospêrous maritime oriented family during the last half of the 19th century. 8. The Greek Revival-style dwelling is a remarkably intact assemblage of main block and ells unified by a consistent application of well-executed decorative detailing. The house holds associations wi th Harwich's maritime past and with a prominent family of local mariners. Built in the mid 19th century to house a sea captain and his family, the Berry House continued to shelter seafar ing members of the Berry family into the twentieth century.
The house has remained in continuous residential use by the Berry family to the present day. The Captain James Berry House thus fulfils Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Harwich, incorporated in 1694, was by the mid 18th century an area of dispersed settlement with several developing loci of population. West Harwich was one of several villages that grew up south of Harwich Center and just north of the coast. Fishing, whaling, and maritime-related trade had, by the eve of the Revolution, become the town's principal business. After the war, with the collapse of the whale fisheries, fishing along Harwich's southern coast became increasingly important. Main Street, established in the early 19th century, provided a southern east-west route linking Harwich's coastal villages and stimulating both residential and commercial construction.
Early in the Federal period, Harwich's fisheries--predominantly harvesting codfish-made the town one of the three largest fishing centers on the Cape. In 1802, there were 15-20 vessels engaged in shore fishing with four others of 100 tons each active in cod fishing off Newfoundland and Labrador. By 1851, the town's peak year, Harwich had 48 fishing vessels at sea employing almost 600 men and boys. The coasting business and overseas trade also thrived in Harwich. In 1865, Harwich trade was the third most prosperous on the Cape (following her neighbors, Dennis and Barnstable), with 36 packets and thr ee-masted vessels employing 131 men sailing from her coves. After the Civil War, with the introduction of the Cape Cod Central Railroad, the coasting trade diminished somewhat, but Harwich continued to send mar iners to sea in large fishing and trade vessels into the 20th century.
Anong the town's seafar ing families were the Berrys of Main Street, West Harwich. A fledgling shipbuilding industry, barrel-making, and some salt manufacture were also present. The Herring River area, just up the east of West Harwich, became the major shipbuilding center. The nominated property, a well-detailed Greek Revival-style house on West Harwich's Main Street, was built for James Beriy (1826-1881), member of an ear ly Cape family (his ancestor Richard Berry was living in the area as early as 1643). In the mid 1850s, with the profits from his successful business, he was able to build a rather large dwelling to house his family while he was off at sea. Upon mar iners were often feted with parades down Main Street. The house, still in possession of the Berry family, retains a number of souvenirs acquired by the captain dur ing his voyages, including vases fram the Orient, rugs from the g itd by th Middle East, ship paintings, a photo album depicting friends from foreign ports, and a large library. While on a voyage off the coast of Africa in 1881, Capt. Berry died as a result of a severe case of rheumatism. Osmyn, who was along on the voyage, packed his father's body in salt to preserve it until a proper burial could be held in West Harwich.
Berry's widow, Marinda, subsequently married her husband's brother, Henry Berry (1833-1905), also a sea captain, and the Berrys remained at the house on Main Street until their deaths in the early 20th century. Henry Berry, who went to sea at the age of nine in 1842, was a master mariner for 26 of the 43 years he was at sea. Osmyn Berry (1865-1935) was the third seagoing member of the family to own the house. By 1885, when he was 20, Osmyn Berry had circumnavigated the globe three times. He, too, became a master mariner, receiving his papers at age 19 as the youngest captain in the nation. In July 1914, Osmyn Berry became the first to navigate the Cape Cod Canal. The present occupant of the house, Osmyn Berry's grandson, is syndicated car toonist James Osmyn Berry, who with his family uses the house as a summer I esidence.
The recent addition of a studio at the rear of the house was made to suit the needs of a modern family and is in keeping with the size, scale, and detail of the original structure. The Berry House is significant both under Criterion B, for its associations with the Berry family, and under Criterion C, as the well-preserved embodiment of a distinctive style and period of construction. was a popular building style in mid 19th century Harwich, but most were modest 1 1/2-story dwellings. The 2 1/2-story Berry House is more unusual, both for its size and for the unity of its extended plan and elaboration. The appar ently integral ells to side and rear are linked to the main block by the Dor ic-columed porch with parapet, which fronts the side ell, and by a coher ent and consistent use of corner boards and broad entablature, and trabeated door and window surrounds throughout the building.
The house is a fully detailed and remarkably intact example of the Greek Revival style.
