Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTERCRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Benomi and BArnabus Crocker House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations.
It is significant for its long term (until 1926) associations with a well-known local family, for its associations with West Barnstable's agricultural history, and as a fine and well-preserved example of a Federal period Cape cottage. The property thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. The Crocker House is a fine, well preserved example of a full five bay, 1 and 1/2 story Federal period cottage. Its symmetrical facade is centered around an entry with narrow sidelights rather than the more usual transom. Windows have simple surrounds and contain 6/6 sash. The shingle clad structure sits on a low stone foundation and is enclosed by a gable roof with large central chimney. It is extended by a one story rear ell.
The house originated as a three bay half Cape, with the southwest end not added until 1843. Beams and stones from a nearby and deteriorating stone fort are reported to have been used in the original construction. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The two brothers, Erwin and Stephen, II, inherited a Cape half-house from their father Barnabus Crocker before 1842. Erwin added to the house making it a full five bay Cape. Erwin signed the deed to sell his half "built since the decease of my father" in 1842, but Stephen, II did not sell until 1880; then both deeds were filed.
In 1820, Barnabus Crocker purchased the homestead farm, with the house and outbuildings that he now lives upon from Joseph Crocker. He also bought about an acre of land bounded north- easterly by Josiah Fish's property. In 1796 Joseph Crocker purchased all property in in 190 Jogplabut ar Barnstable owned by Benomi Crocker. Joseph agreed to pay all debts and take care of Benomi and his wife Abigail during their natural lives. According to Amos Otis, this whole area was part of the Deacon Willaim Crocker grant. He was one of the original settlers and left this section bounded on the southwest by Willow Street to his son Eleazer in his will of 1692. Deacon Crocker's great grandson, Benomi Crocker, lived in the Old Stone Fort- just northwest of this house- and he built an addition for his son Barnabas. The Old Stone Fort was completely demolished in 1815.
