Date 1986 Photo #47-20-I315 298-16 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Nathaniel Baker House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with an early Barnstable family, and as a social document that reflects the declining economic status of that family. It is also important as a vernacular example of an early Georgian dwelling that was later converted to a two family residence.
The property thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Baker House, dating to the early Georgian period, is a full five bay, 2 story house enclosed by a hip roof with center chimney rising behind the ridge. It is L-shaped in plan, with a two story hipped ell extending to the rear on the south side. The house is shingle clad with unadorned trim confined to cornerboards, window and door surrounds; windows contain 6/6 sash. Many original interior features - - paneling, fireplaces, etc. -- remain. In 1778, deeds record that the house was divided through the "middle of the front door" for use by two owners.
Later deeds refer to a dividing line "between the two doors." This may refer to the front and a side entry, or it may indicate that for a period, the house had a double entry. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Based on extensive deed research and other sources, it is believed that this house was built c. 1721 by Nathaniel Baker IV (1709-1791) on land left to him by his father Nathaniel Baker III (1679-1750), upon the occasion of his marriage to Widow Mercy Lewis. There is also some indication that it may have been built earlier by Nathaniel III. During this period, and into the 19th century, Hyannis Road was known as Baker's Way because of the extensive landholdings of the Baker family in this area.
In 1778, Nathaniel Baker deeded to his daughters, Anna and Hannah, 3/4 of an acre and 1/2 dwelling house, "for taking of me and nursing me in my sickness and long confine- ment for more than three years past..." The deed describes a line through the front door and the middle of the chimney to the "kitchiny" and to include all that part of the * to the Yhi tcht gos dwelling north of said line. Also included was the household furniture except "one pair of looms and my covered sleigh." Nathaniel died in 1791, appointing his sons, Binney and Samuel, as executors. Samuel died soon after his father, with Binney producing an inventory in 1794 that stated there was not enough money to pay the creditors in full, so each received 13/7 on the pound. The house was used as a two family dwelling until 1926.
