Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Josiah B. Whitman House possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as a well preserved and locally well understood vernacular example of the mansard style. It thus meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The house facing northwest is a two story French Second Empire style structure with a wing extending southwest. The square main house has a mansard roof with a central chimney toward the back, and rests on a stone foundation. The frontentrance is on the left and the door has oval lights. There is a bay window on the right of the entry and one dormer window on the second floor. On the left of the entry is a small porch in a jog formed by the wider back part of the house. The pediments and brackets supporting the entry way roof and roofs of the bay windows and porch are ornate in the classic French Second Empire style. The wing has a regular peaked roof with the gable at the southwest end. There is an entrance and one window on the ground floor and two dormer windows on the second floor facing northwest. One dormer is very ornate. There is a chimney in the center of the wing.
Although this cottage is rather simple in its details, it represents a clearer understanding of the Second Empire Style than most others in the town. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. In 1926 Henry P. Young bought five acres and buildings from Lillian W. Rowe of Exeter, New Hampshire with all rights in and to Jones "Mill Pond." Lillian W. Rowe inherited the property from Josiah B. Whitman, her father, in 1923. In 1874 Josiah B. Whitman bought the land from Lydia P. Crocker, his mother-in-law. The deed states - fiveacres cleared land "now occupied by and upon which buildings of said Josiah B. Whitman now stand." Lydia P. Crocker's first husband, Jonas Whitman, son of Dr.
Jonas and Mercy Whitman inherited a great deal of property from his parents and a trust set up by his mother. However, he purchased this parcel from Oliver Bodfish in 1844. Ebenezer Bodfish who died in 1832, had given part of his land holdings to Josiah and Oliver Bodfish in 1822. Amos: Otis wrote that Ebenezer Bodfish was of the fourth generation. Robert Bodfish was one of the original settlers in the town of Sandwich. Joseph Bodfish, the ancestor of all the Bodfish families in Barnstable, moved here in 1657 and died in 1744 when he was 94 years old. (see form WBC-94). property and others on the shore of Mill Pond had boundaries set on the flooded land if the pond was ever drained.
