Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Matthias Smith House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as an evolutionary example of a mid-18th century West Barnstable farmstead, consisting of expanded main house and numerous outbuildings.
The property thus meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The house is located on the southwest side of Cedar Street and faces northeast. There are two one story ells added on the left, each stepped back from the front of the main section and with louvered roof line. The originalhouse_was a three-quarter Cape and the addition was made on the right to become a full Cape. There is a chimney through the peak near the southeast gable end of the house and another at the northwest gable end. There is also a chimney through the peak of the northwest end of the second ell. The centrally located front door has a transom of two "bulls eye" lights. The windows are small pane 12/12 lite.
The house has a low stone foundation on the southeast end and cement on the northwest end. The exterior is unpainted wood shingle. The center front door, with 2 "bulls eye" lights opens into the present living room running thedepth of the house. To the immediate left is a door to a bedroom, further down the same wall a door leads to the present dining room. From the living room, a steep stair goes to 2 bedroom upstairs and is located behind the back wall of the living room. A bathroom is on past the stairs. Holway purchased the property from Mary Lawrence, his grandmother. had purchased the rights from the heirs to the property after Henry Lawrence, her husband, died in 1863.
Henry Lawrence of Sandwich purchased the buildings and forty acres from Isaac Smith of Rhode Island in 1836. Isaac Smith inherited the property from his father Mathias Smith in 1819. Mathias Smith, born 1738, married Hannah Fuller in 1762. Isaac was born in 1784. Cedar Street was once part of the Indian Trail used by early settlers which ran from Plymouth to Mattakeese (Barnstable-Yarmouth) until the County road, now Main Street, was established in 1686. Robert and Lynda Baysen bought 6.09 acres of land and the buildings in 1978 from Frank Hincks, Jr.; the SE corner of the original farm. Frank and Doris Hinckshad owned a larger section of the farm, 40+ acres, since 1938 when they purchased from Arvid Lampi, who sold a "portion of the premise conveyed by Mary Penny Roga." Mrs. Roga, widow of Joseph Penny Roga, sold to Mr. Lampi in 1920. Mr.
Roga, 1918, had owned the farm since 1914, having purchased from Joseph N. Holway. The farm was the homestead of Henry Lawrence, who owned a great deal of property. After his death in 1863, his wife Mary Lawrence, purchased the rights of the heirs in the farm, then in 1868 sold the farm to her grandson, Joseph H. Holway, with the provision she could "retain occupancy for her natural life." Sarah Holway, daughter of Mary Lawrence and mother of Joseph H., lived NW of the farm on Maple St. (Form #WBC-98). Henry Lawrence of Sandwich purchased the buildings and 40 acres from Isaac Smith of Cumberland, Rhode Island in 1836. Isaac Smith got the homestead property of buildings and 30 acres from his father, Mathias Smith, in 1819. Mathias Smith, ,born 1738, married Hannah Fuller in 1762. Their son Isaac was born in 1784.

This is a working farm, with a barn, tool house, 3 chicken houses andgarage as outbuildings.
