Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Barzillai Weeks House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations.

It is significant for its long term (150 years) associations with a well-known local family, for its associations with West Barnstable's agricultural history, and as a fine and well-preserved example of a Federal period Cape cottage that also preserves a barn. The property thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. - The Weeks House is a typical full five bay, 1 and 1/2 story cottage of the Federal period. Its symmetrical facade is centered around an entry with five-pane transom and simple sur- round. Windows also have simple frames and contain 12/12 sash. The wood shingle clad house sits on a low stone foundation and is enclosed by a gable roof with large central chimney. It is extended by a one story rear ell.

An old barn also remains on the pro- perty- HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Weeks family owned this property on the southwest side of Scorton Hill in West Barn- stable for one hundred and fifty years, from 1795-1956. The tract of 35 acres believed to have previously belonged to Captain John and Mary Percival, where their Iamous son, Captain "Mad Jack" John Percival (1779-1862) was born. Trayser devotes seven pages to his life and exploits in his 1939 history of Barnstable. The old deed of purchase from Barzilla Weeks of the property by his son John describes the 35 acre tract as having the Widow Percival's land in the middle of it.

The house is on the southside of High Street which was also called the Post Raod and was also a route used by the stage coaches and travelers; over the town line in East Sandwich it becomes the Old County Raod. Barzillai Weeks was born in 1769 and married Mathilda Tobey in 1794. They had four children- John born 1796, Eleazar born 1798, Alvin born 1802, and Ezra born 1807.
