Chipman Hinckley assembled a large land holding in Marstons Mills between 1800-1840. It is believed that he built the present house c. 1850. When Chipman died in 1858, his estate went to his son Russell. The property remained in theHinckley family until 1882, when it was purchased by Sylvanus Bourne. The estate at that time was described as a homestead, outbuildings and 200 acres. Sylvanus died in 1887 and in 1890, Caroline Bodge purchased it from his heirs. From Caroline, it went to Louis Kleinschmidt in 1898, and then to Lorenzo Gifford in 1919. It was at this time that it achieved its greatest historical significance. Lorenzo developed a large dairy herd with attendant milk route, a slaughterhouse and a smoke house. This remained, until the mid-20th century, as Marstons Mills last working farm. Additionally, from 1926-1941, Mrs.

Gifford served as post mistress, with facilities in a building on the premises, making it a village social center in the early-mid 20th century.
