Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Liberty Hall possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with village life in Marstons Mills, in its role as a gathering place, since 1859. It is also a representative example of a simple mid 19th century institutional building.
It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Liberty Hall is a simple 1 1/2 story structure designed in the Greek Revival style in 1859. It is enclosed by a gable roof and trimmed by corner pilasters and an en- tablature. Windows are large, framed with projecting lintels and contain 12/12 sash; the gable window contains 6/6. The entry is located in a one story enclosed porch angled off one corner. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The village hall was erected in 1859 and owned by a stock company of village residents. This follows a typical Barnstable pattern.
It was called "Liberty Hal1" in 1866 as an item in the Barnstable Patriot indicates. The old horse sheds were still standing well into the 20th century. They were of open-front design and used by both hall and church. In 1945 the hall was renovated by the Methodist Church and used as a parish house. The church bought the building shortly after and sold to the Men's Club in 1960.During the 1890s the hallwas used by the Dramatic Club of Marstons Mills. Most village activities requiring space took place in the hall. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Deyo, Simeon. History of Barnstable County, Massachusetts. 1890 The Seven Villages of Barnstable. 1976.
