OVB 30 Town Barnstable (Osterville) Address 38 Bay Street Historic Name Nymphus Hinckley House Use: Present dwelling Original dwelling DESCRIPTION Date c1780 Source Osterville Historical Society Style Federal Architect unknown Exterior Wall Fabric wood shingle Outbuildings 100 year old barn Major Alterations (with dates) ell added 1970 Condition excellent Moved Acreage Setting no 1.07 Daten/a 117/35 _residential street immediately west of commercial center Recorded by Candace Jenkins Organization Barnstable Historical Comm. Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Nymphus Hinckley House is significant as a well preserved example of a Federal period cottage which also retains a-period barn. The evocative 19th century quality of the property is very unusual in such close proximity to Osterville center which has been intensely developed in recent years.

The Hinckley House and barn thus meet cri- terion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Nymphus Hinckley House is a traditional five bay center entry and chimney cottage, rising 1 and 1/2 stories to a gable roof. The entry is paneled and headed by a multi- pane transom in typical Federal period fashion. Windows have simple slightly projecting frames and contain 6/6 sash. Both entry and facade windows are located directly be- neath the eaves. A period barn greatly enhances the significance of the property which is a rare period survivor in Osterville's intensely developed village center. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.

Nymphus Hinckley was a Revolutionary War veteran and a descendent of Governor Hinckley. Nevertheless, the was excommunicated from the Centerville Congregational Church (CVC27) in 1820 following a dispute over money and property with Isaac Hodges. When the church decided in favor of Hodges, Hinckley voluntarily withdrew from the church fellowship on April 20, 1821; he was subsequently excommunicated. In the late 19th century (c1895), Osmond F. Ames, a Civil War veteran, lived here. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES BArnstable County Atlases. 1858, 1880, 1907. Chesbro & Crosby. Osterville, A Walk Through the Past. 1979.
