It is significant for its strong ties to the growth and development of Hyannis' Irish community. It is also significant as a well preserved, vernacular, Greek Revival style cottage with period barn. Ihe property thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Canary/Hartnett House is located at the corner of Stevens and Winter Streets, one of two settlement centers for Hyannis' sizable Irish immigrant population. It is the earliest house in the vicinity, and extremely well preserved, retaining even its shingled gable end barn with attached shed. The house itself is a traditional expression of the Greek Revival style. It is a 1½ story structure enclosd by a gable roof with ridge parallel to the street. The wide spacing between window tops and roofline indicate kneewall construction and a mid-19th century date. The entry, which, along with the stove chimney is off-set to the left and simply framed with a narrow lintel shelf harking back to the Federal period.
Also reflecting that earlier period are flared lintels over windows containing 2/1 sash. The facade is clapboarded while the remainder of the house is shingled. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Canary/Hartnett House is associated with two of Hyannis' Irish families. The Irish began immigrating. to Cape Cod after the potato famine of 1851 and especially in 1854-55, when many jobs became available constructing the Cape Cod Branch Railroad. Others worked as farmers, laborers, teamsters or handymen. The corner of Stevens and Winter Streets, where this house is located, was one of two settlement clusters for the Irish; the other was around Sea Street at the east end. The Irish were the first group to immigrate to Barnstable in large numbers.
By 1855, 135 had settled in the town; this was the second largest in the County after Sandwich (also traversed by the Cape Cod Branch Railway). The 1874 construction of St. Patrick's Church on South Street is indicative of the growing size and strength of the community The house does not appear on the 1858 atlas, but by 1880 it was owned by Mrs. Canary, and in 1907 by J.
