Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Gleason House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with BArnstable's 19th century maritime history, with Dr. Edward Francis Gleason and the founding of Cape Cod Hospital, and as a fine example of Federal period domestic architecture.
It thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Gleason House is a fine two story example of the Federal period style, built on an L-plan and enclosed by intersecting hip roofs pierced by interior chimneys. The entry, centered on the five bay facade, is elaborated with 3/4 sidelights, an eliptical fan, and a one story Tuscan porch. Other trimmings include corner quoins, and a delicate dentilated cornice. Windows contain 2/1 replacement sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
The first known owner of this house is Captain Timothy Baker who is listed on the 1835 and 1856 town maps as well as the 1858 county atlas; his heirs are listed as owners on the 1880 atlas. Captain Timothy was master of coastal vessels. By the early 20th century, the house had passed out of the Baker family, as the 1907 atlas lists it as the J. Hallett Estate. The dwelling's most notable owner was Dr. Edward Francis Gleason (1868-1944), the founding physician of nearby Cape Cod Hospital.
