Date unknown Acreage -22 acres 308/275 Setting residential 19th century neigh- borhood in central Hyannis Recorded by_Candace Jenkins Organization BArnstable Historical Comm. Date 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Crosby/Crowell House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant primarily as an unusual example of Federal period construction with a rear wall plan. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Crosby Huse is located in central Hyannis on a small suburban lot between Main and South Streets. It is a fine unaltered example of the Federal period style.
Rising two full stories to a hip roof with rear wall chimneys, it is substantially different from other local examples of the style. Rear wall chimney plans are uncommon in Barnstable County. It is sheathed with wood shingles which may be a 20th century change, and extended by a l and 1/2 story gable roof rear ell. Its symmetrical five bay facade is organized around a Greek Revival style entry with rectangular transom and sidelights as well as an architrave with lintel shelf. Fenestration consists of 12/12 sash in simple frames with shutters. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. According to local histories, this house was owned by two different Captain Crosby's during its early history. It also served as the first parsonage of the Baptist Church on Main Street.
It has been moved since construction as is born out by mid 19th century atlases and maps which show nothing on the present site. It may have been the Captain Augustus Crowell (possible mid 19th century owner) House moved back from Main Street during its intense 20th century commercialization.
