Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Captain Oliver Bearse House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It has had several notable occupants, but is significant primarily for the high quality of its Greek Revival style design. The property thus meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.

The Bearse House is an exceptionally well detailed example of a sidehall Greek Revival house with side entry. In this case, the structure rises a full 2 1/2 stories rather than assuming the more:common 1 1/2 story cottage form. The main block is detailed with paneled corner pilasters carrying an entablature that encircles the building and sets the gable off as a pediment. The entry is enframed by side lights and paneled pilasters that carry an entablature and a heavy lintel shelf. The wing contains a similarly detailed entry, lacking only the sidelights and the heaviness of the lintel shelf. Windows throughout contain 2/2 sash and are headed by wide flat lintels. The entire structure is clapboard clad, and set off from Pearl Street by a white picket fence.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This is one of two homes that were owned by Capt. Oliver L. Bearse. Bearse, originally from Yarmouth, was the brother of Asa Bearse, and like his brother was a deep water Oliver owned and lived in the residence from 1841 until 1850, when he and his wife Sally moved into the residence on School Street. After that his mother and two sisters Mary and Abigail occupied the house. In 1898 the house was sold to the Bonds. This family was noteworthy in having started the first commercial plumbing business on Cape Cod. The Bond family kept the ownership until 1979. Today it is a guest house owned by Donald McKeag.
