Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Hinckley House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is signfiicant as the home of Ora Hinckley who served as village librarian (see areaHYE) for 35 years, and for the intact quality of its Georgian period architecture. The house thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hinckley House is a full 1½ story Cape Cod cottage, sheathed in wood shingles and enclosed by a gable roof with central chimney.

It is extended to the rear by a l-story ell, also with gable roof and chimney. The five-bay facade includes a center entry, framed by simple pilasters and flanked by two windows on each side with replacement 1/1 sash. The gable ends include two windows at the first story and two at the second flanked by. small square outer windows. Well preserved houses of 18th century date are rare in Hyannis. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. During the latter part of the 19th century this house was owned by S. Alexander Hinckley and his wife Ora, whom he married in 1886. After S. Alexander died in 1908, Ora became librarian for the newly-located Hyannis Library (Area HYE); she remained closely affiliated with the library until her death in 1943.
