Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The John Richardson House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as one of the few remaining remnants of Centerville's original settlement center, for its long-term associations with the Richardson tamily, and as a well-preserved example oi a rederal period Cape cottage. It thus meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. The John Richardson House is an excellent local example of 3/4 Cape cottage rising 1} stories to a gable roof. Both entry and chimney are located one bay in from the an mportant Trim is minimal lacking even the usual transom over the entry. Windows contain 6/6 sash.
The house is extended by a one story rear ell. Retention of the barn is an important feature of the property. A 1 and 1/2 story wing was added to the north side of the house without impacting its original design in the mid-19th ceatury. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This is the only house in Centerville where members of the original family still own the homestead. It has been passed down from one generation to the next. John Richardson was a Harvard student who came to teach school in 1795 and shortly thereafter built ,this house for his wife. He was the first school teacher at the Phinneys Lane School. "Jane Phinney Richardson (b. 1813) had an addition built onto the house, probably the side ell.
This house is important as one of the few early dwellings remaining in Centerville's original settlement center on Phinneys Lane; it is just north of the first meetinghouse location and the burying ground (CVA801).
