HISTORY OF BURIAL GROUND Oldest Burial Ground in Centerville, adjacent to site of First Schoolhouse (now home of David Ruska). The oldest stone in the cemetery is that of Mr. Jonathan Hamblen, died June 22, 1743 at 74 years. Died at sea: George Bearse 22 Francis B. Criteria The Phinney's Lane Burying Ground possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as the only non-residential extant component of Centerville's original 18th century settlement center, and for the artistic quality of its gravestones which include the full range of 18th and 19th century types. Architectural or Sculptural Monuments Date of Monument Family Name Stones are mostly rectangular plate before 1830. In Type Sculptor/Artist later 1800's they are grantite or marble but no outstanding sculptures are noted. Figures shown on early ones are death-heads (skulls) followed by angels with wings.
