Date 1986 Photo #62-2-A2 230/116-2A NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMEN (if applicable) The Phinney House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as the earliest remaining building in Centerville's original settlement and for its associations with the settlement process. It is also significant for its architectural qualities which include the bowed roof peculiar to Cape Cod; this significance is heightened by the fact the builder was probably it's carpenter owner.

The house thus meets crieria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. The Phinney House is one of the oldest in Centerville and is unique in possessing the bowed roof which is peculiar to Cape Cod. It is a full, five bay, 1½ story cottage with center entry and chimney. The entry is characterized by a narrow transom and simple frame. Windows have simple projecting frames and contain 6/6 sash which is not original if the early 18th century date is correct. Tradition states that it was built as a half house c. 1730 which was later expanded to full size. The interior displays exposed structural members, original H and L hinges, and a double wall on the northeast side.

Its only major alterations have been the addition of a bathroom and modern kitchen facilities. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. William Phinney was a carpenter, learning his trade at age 14. He maintained a shop for several years in a building used by the Bacon School.
