Date 1986 Photo #90-7 D110 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The shop at 600 Main Street, Hyannis, posssesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. It is significant for its associations with the development of Hyannis' Main Street commercial area, and as a well preserved and detailed early 20th century commercial block. It thus meets crtieria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This small scale wood-frame commercial block with rear ell, designed in the Colonial Revival style, is 1 1/2 stories, enclosed by a gable roof. Sheathed in traditional wood shingles, its roof is ornamented by a three part dormer with balustrade. The facade is largely taken up by plate glass show windows with recessed entries; these are headed by a signboard. Windows visible on the side elevations contain multi-pane lozenge shape upper sash over single pane lower sash. This typical Colonial Revival style feature draws on the earlier Queen Anne style. altered since construction and even retains original downspouts. 595 Main Street rocalns origka The building appears to be little is similar but less intact (HYD-106).

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This small scale, wood-frame Colonial Revival style commercial block typifies west Main Street's gradual conversion to a commercial area in the early 20th century. Despite its obvious commercial nature, it relates well to the scale and materials established by the ealier residential buildings. Such intact older commercial blocks contribute greatly to Hyannis' ambiance as a summer resort, and reflect its development as such at the turn-of-the-century.
