Date 1986 - Photo # 101-44-A25 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Captain George Lovel1 House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as the home of a prominent sea captain and citizen, and as an unusual example of the Federal period style with major Colonial Revival style remodelings. It thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Like the Shubael Baxter House (OVA-24) across the street, the imposing Capt. George Lovell House represents an early 20th century remodeling of a Federal period house with full blown Colonial Revival style details.
These include the monumental quatrastyle pedimented portico, balustrade across the facade, as well as the lengthening first story windows and addition of triangular pediments above them. The house is a symmetrical five bays and rises two stories to a steeply pitched hip roof; it is of double pile plan with paired end wall chimneys, thus representing the height of Federal period fashion. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Captain George Lovell, the original owner of this house, served in the War of 1812 during which he was captured by the British and imprisoned in Dartmoor Prison. During the Civil War, Lovell was credited with carrying many slaves to freedom in the north. He was also running between Boston, New York and Albany.
He was also the owner of several schooners built in Osterville by Oliver Hinckley. One of his ships, the "Warrior" sank aff the coast of Block Island in 1831. Lovell helped organize the Osterville Baptist Church and donated some land to build the church on (OVA-18). Later in the 19th :entury and into the 20th, the house was owned by Thankful Ames who started the first rillage reading room here in 1873. After 1907 the house was owned by Peter F. Connally, :he -builder of the New York City Sixth Avenue Subway. Connally was probably the owner :esponsible for the substantial Colonial Revival style remodelings apparent today.
