It is significant for its long term associations with several locally prominent families, and as a well preserved example of the Federal style in Osterville Village Center. It thus meets criteria C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Lovel1 House is a well-preserved 3/4 Cape cottage rising 1½ stories to a gable roof. Its entry is treated in typical Federal period style, with multi-paned transom and strip pilasters. Windows are simply enframed and contain 6/6 sash. A three bay, two story wing, that appears to be contemporary with the house, extends to the east from the rear of the house. The house is greatly enhanced by its generous lot, providing an open setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Nehemiah Lovel1 (1764-1820) was the first known owner of this cottage.
Originally buried in a family plot at the corner of this farm, Nehemiah is now interred at Hillside Cemetery (OVA-801). The house was later owned by Capt. David Fullerwho was lost at sea in 1854, leaving a widow, Olive, and a son, David Jr. (1814-1916). David, Jr. served in the Civil War. The Fuller family resided in this house for about 100 years.
