Date - 1986 photo #99-28-A18 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Osterville Baptist Church possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for the central role it has played in the development and continuation of Osterville's village life, for its associations with numerous prominent citizens, and as a good local example of mid-19th century ecclesicestical architecture. It thus meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Baptist Church is the most prominent remaining historic structure in the center of Osterville, an area which has been largely rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century.

It retains the traditional rectangular meetinghouse form, and faces gable end to the street with a belfry and steeple rising above the facade. The facade contains two entries at the first story, two windows at the second and a small triangular window in the gable. ' The entries are enframed by sidelights and pilasters supporting entablatures. The windows, which contain 6/6 sash, are headed by pointed arches in the Gothic Revival style. The building is articulated by corner pilasters supporting an entablature. Windows on the three bay sides are similar to those of the facade. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. ) The Osterville Baptist Society originated in 1835 when 28 members of the Hyannis congregation withdrew and held an organizational meeting at Capt. George Lovell's house.

Capt. Lovell donated a site in the center of the village and the church was erected at a cost of $2,296.01. It was dedicated on January 4, 1838. Capt. Lovell and Benjamin Hallett, another active organizer, were the first Deacons. Capt. Hallett was father of 10 daughters and one son. Capt. Lovell married his daughter Adelaine. He organized the Dispatch Line, one of the first packet lines between Boston, Albany and New York, along with Z. D. Bassett and Matthew Cobb.
