Date 1986 91-35-F131 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The shop at 237-239 Main Street, possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with the development of Hyannis' Main Street commercial area, and as a well preserved and detailed early 20th century commercial block.
It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This large freestanding, wood-frame commercial block rises two stories to a flat roof and narrow cornice supported on brackets. Its second story windows are generally paired, contain 1/1 sash and some have mis-proportioned triangular pediments typical of the Queen Anne style. A single window at the building's angled NW corner is headed by a clock and may once have had a turret. Storefronts appear to be largely original with a single recessed center entry and elegant leaded glass transom. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
This prominently sited large scale wood frame commercial block is one of the handsomest in the area. It is representative of the transformation of Main Street to a busy commercial district in the 20th century. It is especially important because it has survived well, even its storefronts. Such intact older commercial blocks contribute greatly to Hyannis's ambiance as a summer resort, and reflect its development as such at the turn- of-the-century- BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Town Assessors Records.
