Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Captain William Hallett House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials. workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its early associations with Hyannis' maritime era, for its later associations with Dr.
Charles Harris, and for its present commercial associations. It is also an interesting éxample of a Federal period Cape cottage with Queen Anne style features. The property thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hallett House is a full five bay, 1 and 1/2 story Cape cottage rising from a low granite foundation to a gable roof with center chimney. It is sheathed with clapboards on the front elevation and shingles on the other elevations. Original windows which are not boarded, contain 1/1 and 2/2 sash. Queen Anne style remodelings include a bay window on the east facade, a porch with turned balusters of the south facade, and a full shed roof dormer with eyebrow curve over the central windows.
Its present appearance is evocative of Hyannis's early seafaring past, as well as its later intense commercialization. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in localor state history and how the uilding relates to the development of the community. During the mid-19th century, this full Cape was occupied by Captain William Hallett (1805- 1872), a master of deep water schooners. By 1880, the property had passed to Mrs. S. Hamblin and by 1907, to Mrs. E.H. Hammond. Shortly thereafter it became the residence of Dr. Charles Harris, M.D., by which time it had assumed its present appearance. Harris is noted not only as a village physician, but also as the author of Hyannis Sea Captains in 1939. In recent years, the Main Street property has been converted to com- ercial uses.
