Date 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Campbell House possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with Main Street's conversion from a residential to a commercial area in the first half of the 20th century. It is the only former dwelling to be so converted without seriously comprising its original character.
It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Campbel1 House is a 1 and 1/2 story cottage enclosed by a gable roof and sheathed with decoratively banded wood shingles. A three bay shed dormer extends across the front roof The center entry is protected by an open gabled porch with Tuscan columns. entry is currently flanked by multi-pane display windows, dating from the building's conversion from residential to commercial use. It remains a good example of the relatively scarce Arts & Crafts style. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
The Campbell House was built on land that was originally part of the large Jessie Passamore Estate (house now destroyed). In 1913, Mary J. Rimmer, then owner of the estate, had it subdivided into several parcels. In 1916, she sold the present lot (without buildings) to Collen C. and Margaret W. Campbell. The Campbel1's probably erected the present house They retained ownership until 1930 when the lot with buildings thereon was sold to John and Louise Jason. Since 1954, the building has been in the continous ownership of the Sperry family. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Barnstable County Registry of Deeds and Probate.
