Date 1986 VATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Captain Seth Baker, Jr. House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant for its associations with various members of the Baker family and as a well preserved example of a traditional, vernacular building form. The survival of such humble residential forms, especially in a commercial area, is rare, and serves to illustrate the evolution of that area. The Baker House thus meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
RCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of ther buildings within the community. Che Capt. Seth Baker House is a simple vernacular form of the early to mid-19th century, econizable by its 1 1/2 story height, five bay facade, central chimney and entry, and :elatively low pitch of the gable roof with knee wall leaving a large space between rindows and cornice. This example is also extended by a rear lean-to and ell. The 'acade is centered around the entry which reflects the federal period with its tall frieze nd thin projecting cornice. Windows are simple enframed and contain 6/6 sash. The lid century date of the house is revealed primarily in the height of its interior spaces is indicated by the distance between windows and cornice. The survival of this simple ouse on the Main St./Rte. 28 corridor is remarkable.
ISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the lilding relates to the development of the community. apt. Seth Baker, Jr. was a deep water captain. He married Sophia Lovell in 1822 and ook her for a trip to- Jamaica for their honeymoon. Their grandson was Walter D. Baker, hose wife started the Colonial Candle Co. (HYF-134). The humble aspect of Baker's ouse seems to indicate a wide discrepancy in social/economic status among sea captains.
