Ames House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with a Civil War Veteran and later, with the "Fresh air" movements, as well as for its wel1 preserved, late 19th century seaside architecture. It thus meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Ames House is a vernacular seaside cottage reflecting the asymmetry of the Queen Anne style. Built on a square plan, its form is made more complex by its intersecting gabled roofline. Details are almost nonexistent and fenestration is irregular, although narrow segmental arched windows are located in the gables.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The house was built by Josiah A. Ames (1827-1900) on his return from the western gold. rush. He served in the Civil War in the 40th infantry. The Lincoln House Ass. of Boston used the house as a lodge from 1902-1922.
