Date 1986 Photo #107-106-B41 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT(if applicable) Thie Lincoln House Club possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its early associations with the "fresh air" movement, and as a fine, unaltered example of the Shingle Style. It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Lincoln House Club is a fine local example of the Shingle Style which has survived intact despite its conversion from club/lodging house to private dwelling after 1922. In the best tradition of the style as it developed in the 1880s, the entire mass of the house is gathered under one sheltering broad gabled roof and is entirely sheathed with shingles. The house rises 2 1/2 stories beneath the roof which extends on carved brackets. Large dormers break the smooth slope of the roof. A porch contained by the roof, faces out toward the sea. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.

This structure was erected by the Lincoln Club of Boston, a "fresh air" assoctation whose members could enjoy the seaside for two weeks in the summer. This building served as the Association's center as well as a lodging house. The Association was dissolved in 1922 and the property sold. Tradition asserts that the building was designed by a Boston architect, but does not name the designer. An Indian burying ground may also be located on the property. During renovations, a headless skeleton was found lying on top of the heating pipes. An examiner from Harvard's Peabody Museum came to no definite conclusions about the origins of the skeleton.
