Ilnm r n NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Daniel Crosby House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as the home of a noted Osterville citizen and as a fine unaltered example of a Federal period half Cape. It thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Daniel Crosby House is a traditional half Cape cottage, with three bay facade, and side entry and chimney. It rises 1 1/2 stories to a gable roof. Windows have projecting frames and contain 6/6 sash. The entry is simply framed. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.

Daniel Crosby (1765-1828) was the ancestor of all Osterville Crosby's including the noted boatbuilders. He was known as a merchant from 1804-1854. The house is conveniently located on the access to North and West Bays where most boatbuilding took place. A later owner was the Reverend Edward Bourne Hinckley, a Methodist minister and the first village librarian.
