Date 1986 - Photo #81-15-A9 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Santuit Post Office possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its associations with the development of Cotuit Port as the village center, as the village post office from 1846-1970, and as a good example of early Gothic Revival architecture. It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Santuit Post Office is a curious building whose diminutive size and simple Gothic Revival style detailing resemble the "cottages" being erected at seaside resorts in the period 1850-1875. It is a simple 1 1/2 story structure with steeply pitched gable roof and flush board siding. A one story porch, now carried on tubular metal supports, protects the side entry. An oriel is located in the second story gable. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Cotuit's Post Office was established in 1821 in the home of RolandT. Crocker (Area CTA-1), the first postmaster. In 1848 a post office was opened closer to the growing center at Cotuit Port.
Although some historians have stated that this post office dates from the original establishment in 1821, its simple Gothic Revival style detailing reflects a construction date in the 1840s when the Cotuit Port branch supposedly opened. A more likely history would be that upon the death of Roland Crocker in 1846, a movement was startedto movethe post office closer to the growing Cotuit Port section. The style and location (mid-way between Santuit and Cotuit Port) support this theory. In further support, no post office building is shown on the 1858 atlas of Cotuit Port.
