It is significant primarily for its associations with the 18th century movement to Christianize Native Americans, and with its original owner, the Reverend Gideon Hawley, who was pastor to the Marshpee Indians.
The house thus meets criteria A and B of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hawley House is an asymmetrical four bay, 2 1/2 story house enclosed by a gable roof with rebuilt offset chimney. Fenestration of the facade is asymmetrical and the entry is offset to the west. Windows have narrow moldings whose lintels project slightly at the first story, and are widened at the second to meet the cornice; all contain 6/6 sash. The entry is framed by pilasters whose original Corinthian capitals have been obscurred by addition of a pergola porch in the early 20th century. The rear western kitchen ell is probably a 19th century addition. If the early date ascribed to this house is correct, it has undergone numerous changes.
Due to its asymmetrical facade, it is likely that it originated as a half house, possible at 1 1/2 story cottage height; window frames and sash would also have been changed. Architecturally, this is the least imposing of the full two story Georgian and Federal period houses in Santuit. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built by the Rev. Gideon Hawley (1727-1807) who was a native of Connecticut. He graduated from Yale College in 1749, was ordained in 1751 and was sent to Stockbridge, Mass. by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel where he was under the supervision of the great Jonathan Edwards. After a short term with the Stockbridge Indians, he was sent to minister to the New York Indians of the Seven Nations and became chaplain to the army in Col.
Richard Gridley's company during the Indian Wars. Ill health made it necessary for him to be transferred to Marshpee before 1758. He seems to have been popular with The Marshpee Indians petitioned King George for 5 acres to be given to him in 1760. In 1780 they again petitioned the Supreme Court of Massachusetts Bay Çolony for an additional 30 acres including marsh and meadow. He married Lucy Fessenden of Sandwich in 1759. She died in 1794 and he married Elizabeth Burchard of Nantucket. The house was probably built about 1758 to be near the village of Cotuit and on the stage road from Barnstable to Sandwich and Falmouth. The house was originally closer to the road but was moved back during a road * tEnocthy otose, prestd widening project in 1920. Timothy Dwight, president of Yale, called upon Rev.
Hawley during his tour of New England, and describes stopping there during the minister's son James' last illness. The Hawleys occupied the house until the death of Gideon, Sr. in 1807. Later owners were Robert Fuller (1839-1908) and Julia Fuller (1855-91). Its most recent long term occupant was Mrs. Dora Nickerson who bought it in 1928 and died there in 1979. She thought that a burial ground had been uncovered on the property when the house was moved in 1920, but no recent evidence has been found to corroberate this.
