It is significant as the home of a prominent citizen and sea captain, and as a fine example of the Italianate style.
It thus meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Captain Sylvester Baxter House is the most fully developed example of the Italianate style in Barnstable, a town noted for numerous good examples of that style. Square in plan, it rises 2-2 stories to a gable roof interrupted by a facade gable and a central belvedere. It is facedwith a mastic to appear as stone and is trimmed with brackets in the gables and stilted segmental arches over the windows. Its facade has unfortunately lost several key features, including its front porch which spanned the distance between two flanking oriel windows, and a second story euveen ewo l oriel above the central entry with double lead door.
Nevertheless, it remains a handsome example of the style. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Captain Sylvester Baxter (1800-1861) was the younger brother of Captain Alexander Baxter, sometimes referred to as the father of Hyannis. Although somewhat eclipsed by his brother, Sylvester's wealth was valued at $16,864.90 at his death, and he had served in several public positions in addition to his career as a deep water captain. He was the First Worshipful Master of the Fraternal Lodge of Masons after its reorganization in 1851, and he was elected State Senator in 1854, serving for two years. Later, he was elected Deputy Inspector and Collector of the Port of Hyannis. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Barnstable County Atlases, 1858, 1880, 1907.
