Baxter House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a well preserved and detailed Greek Revival style cottage built by its original owner. It thus meets criterion C of the National of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Charles L. Baxter House is a 1 and 1/2 story Greek Revival style house of L-shaped plan.
It is sheathed with clapboards and trimmed with corner pilasters and a full en- tablature. The entry, which is framed by pilasters, an entablature and lintel shelf, is located on the forward projecting wing that faces gable end to the street. The two flanking windows have projecting lintels as do others on the the house. A one story porch, supported on slender columns, extends across the side wing whose roof is pierced by a large gable roofed dormer. A bay window that is probably a later addition is located on the south elevation and a rear ell extends back from that point. A barn sits at the rear of the porperty. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
In 1858, Alvan Crocker, who had acquired much of the land in this area from his family (see Area CTA), sold one acre of cleared land to Charles L. Baxter, housewright. Baxter had recently sold his former homestead to Nelson Rhodehouse (CTA62). BAxter presumably constructed this house since his occupation was that of housewright. He continued to reside here until his death. In 1918, Edgar Lovell, administrator of his estate, sold the "Homestead of Charles L. Baxter" to Roscoe Brackett. Brackett owned the property until 1924 when he conveyed the land and house to John M. Almeida. The property has had several owners since the Almeida's.
